A European, probably Danish military issue short sword of Land Transport Corps Pattern. Ribbed brass grip with solid cross piece terminating in circular finials is stamped to the side flat of the cross guard with a D inspection stamp. Single edged unfullered blade with false edge to the top front 6”. Widely used by armies all over Europe in the mid 19th century these short swords were both effective arms in combat and useful for camp duties such as wood chopping or building of improvised defensive positions in action. They were most famously issued to the men of the British Land Transport Corps during the Crimean war, this particular example is believed to be of the pattern issued to the Danish army at that time, having no marks to the blade and a single D inspection stamp to the grip. In good condition with a clean blade showing some light cleaned pitting and good grips. A nice short sword of the mid Victorian period to the LTC pattern, for around half the price of a British marked Ordnance example.
