A very nice .30” rim fire Colt New Line revolver with English proofs from the Reginald J Cheetham collection.

£825

A very nice .30” rim fire Colt New Line revolver with English proofs from the Reginald J Cheetham collection. Case hardened frame with side plate to the left side has spur trigger to the underside and rebated loading groove to the right, much original colour case to the frame. Varnished rose wood birds head grips. Five shot Birmingham proofed cylinder with .30” model long flutes. 2 ¼” round blued barrel struck with Victorian Birmingham proof marks is roll engraved to the top COLT’S PT F.A. MFG Co HARTFORD CT U.S.A. and COLT NEW 30 etched faintly to the left side. Knurled arbour pin to the underside. Made for just three years from 1874 to 1876 with around 11000 manufactured in total the new line was the only Colt revolver to be offered in the .30” calibre. Designed as a small and concealable self defence arm the Colt was at the time just too well made and expensive, it lost out in sales to the cheap ‘Saturday Night Specials’ being widely manufactured in the USA during the 1870’s and Colt soon dropped the pistol from their range. The high quality pistols did however find a ready market in England with those requiring a self defence arm and many like this are found with Victorian English proof marks having been imported by Colts or other independent retailers. In very good condition with good bore and mechanics, very good rosewood grips and much blue / case hardened finish to the barrel and frame. A nice example of a scarce English proofed Colt from the comprehensive Reginald Cheetham collection of firearms and scientific instruments.
