A fine quality approx 54 bore (.45”) London proofed under over turn over double barrel percussion pocket pistol by Robert Marshall of Gateshead. Finely scroll engraved slab sided frame with bunn nut retained hammer to the right side has half cock safety to the rear of the hammer. Scroll engraved trigger guard to the underside. Finely chequered walnut grips with vacant white metal escutcheon to the rear has steel butt cap with spring retained lid to the base. Rotating smooth bore .45” octagonal under / over barrels with London proof marks struck to the ribs are signed to the top flat ROBt MARSHALL GATESHEAD. Designed to be as flat as possible when carried in an overcoat pocket etc single hammer turn over pistols like this allowed a heavy calibre .45” weapon to be easily carried being little bigger than a conventional single shot pistol but offering the user a quick second shot should the need arise. Good quality pistols such as this would be carried by gentlemen and business men of the early Victorian age to defend both themselves and their property while traveling at a time when police protection rarely extended beyond the centre of the larger towns. A very good quality London made gun this pistol would have been sold by Marshall to a well to do member of northern society at the time. In very good condition with good bores and mechanics, a very nicely engraved frame with good finely chequered grips and barrels to grey patina with age. A fine example of a classic turn over traveling pistol.
