.65” Percussion smooth bore man stopper pistol by Smith. Scroll engraved back action lock with border engraving is signed SMITH. Walnut stock with flat diamond chequered bag shape grip is fitted with scroll engraved iron furniture and has a vacant white metal escutcheon to the rear. Heavy .65” calibre octagonal barrel with swivel rammer to the underside is struck with Birmingham commercial proof marks. A typical Birmingham trade large calibre man stopper pistol these were designed for short range self defence firing a large ball that would stop any assailant in his tracks at normal ranges. In good condition with good bore and mechanics, a nice well chequered sharp stock and barrel to blue / brown finish. A nice example of a typical heavy calibre traveling pistol of the early Victorian era.
