54 bore (Approx .45”) double barrelled percussion traveling pistol by Deanes of London. Scroll engraved box lock action with dolphin hammers to both sides has double triggers to the underside and is engraved to the tang DEANE’S LONDON. Finely chequered walnut bag shaped grips with vacant white metal escutcheon to the rear. London proofed octagonal side by side barrels with swivel rammer to the underside located on a central pin to allow loading of both barrels with full length under rib. Brass bead foresight and standing V notch rear. A good quality gentleman’s self defence pistol of the mid Victorian age designed to be carried in an overcoat pocket etc offering two quick shots of large calibre should the owner be attacked while going about his business or while traveling. In good condition with good bores and mechanics, nice finely chequered grips and barrels turning to blue / brown with age. A good heavy calibre double traveling pistol intended for a user who required an effective means of defending himself and his family / property by a good London maker of the Victorian age.
