A good and scarce Italian manufactured .69” Piedmont Model 1844 smooth bore percussion musket by Torino dated 1858 with socket bayonet. Lock of percussion manufacture but of flintlock form with heavy percussion hammer is engraved TORINO 1858 beneath the Piedmont Royal crest. Walnut stock with regulation pattern steel furniture including three spring retained barrel bands and spurred trigger guard tang, the right side of the stock struck with Piedmont issue roundel. Smooth bore 44” long barrel with standing rear sight to the breech is struck with various military inspection and proof marks along with SG 1855 next to the nipple lump. Complete with its tri corn blade socket bayonet with locking ring to the socket. Now the second largest region of modern day Italy, Piedmont was at this time an independent kingdom and one of many that formed what is now Italy. It was very influential at the time bordering both France and Switzerland and went on to form the springboard from which Italy broke away from Austria to become a state. Many of the arms issued to the kingdoms army were like this based on French designs with many being manufactured at Liege in Belgium with just a small number like this being manufactured in Italy at Torino. Most 1844s were latter Minnie rifled in service to make the M1844/66 rifles leaving unaltered smooth bore arms such as this rarely seen on the market today. In good condition with nice well marked stock with a good bore and very good mechanics. A nice and scarce Piedmont issue musket C/W its bayonet.
